From humble beginnings over 40 years ago, Don and Mary Savage carved out a life for themselves from resources all people use, but few have the vision to capture.
The land on which Crater Sand & Gravel occupies today was originally a turkey farm. Don Savage helped his father raise and sell turkeys.
For the ordinary man, this might have been enough to satisfy all the desires of life. But not Don.
When Don and Mary were married in 1960, turkeys were soon given the boot. With a single 5-yard dump truck and an old loader, Don started digging for his fortune.
Starting out by harvesting gravel from riverbeds, Don began to pursue his dream. Soon, Mary had her own 5-yard dump truck to help Don haul gravel.
As Richard and Allen Savage, their sons, became young men, they too began working in the business alongside their father. Everyone mourned at the loss of Richard to cancer, but his children, Gary & Nicki, continue working at Crater Sand & Gravel today. Allen has continued in the work helping the business to grow. Sharel, their daughter, also was not afraid of hard work and is today known as the most beautiful heavy equipment operator on the west coast.
Through years of long challenging days, gut determination, solid management, honest living, and family unity, Don and Mary have realized many of their goals.
Their efforts, and that of their family, began a business which today is a large and efficient sand, gravel and Redi-Mix company call Crater Sand & Gravel.
Located off Blackwell Road in Central Point, Oregon, Crater Sand & Gravel employs over 25 dedicated and talented people.
